Hai!!!! Recently I've been making it a point to read a lot more actively, will be posting about what I read in here when I have time to make longer posts. If you're reading this, I encourage you to read too! Books are pretty awesome... And post about them, or ones you've already read and want to nerd about it.

i recently finished reading snow crash (1992) by neal stephenson. a more postmodern take on the cyberpunk genre, less innovative than the founding works of the genre, but fun nonetheless. follows the story of a pizza delivering, intelligence gathering cyberspace ninja named hiro protagonist (yes really). a mysterious drug/virus named snow crash is going around, turning people to a cult led by an eccentric tech billionaire/preacher. the world is very well written, so much info and texture is packed in, giving life and background to every element of near-future LA. also gets really deep into a faux-mythology of ancient sumeria and the origins of linguistics, and it ties into the story of snow crash really really well. anyways it was pretty good.

I wish I enjoyed snow crash more! It has some cool ideas but I couldn't get into it.
Couple weeks ago I read the golem by Gustav meyrink. It's a trippy little book that feels like you're picking up several mental disorders. Quite denpa.

I love books. I'm always reading something. this month for example I've been reading some japanese books, mainly I'd like to mention sayaka murata (convenience woman and earthlings, both great!) and a volume of edogawa rampo's short stories. you could say I'm a bit of a weeb hehe
sayaka murata is a contemporary writer who deals with the feeling of otherness in current society, I particularly resonate with the feeling of not feeling human in earthlings; they are quirky novels but I'm unsure why they are often described as "funny", they are sort of horrifying XD
rampo's short stories were great too, I kind of knew the human chair from junji ito's manga version XD but I enjoyed this original version more! you can very clearly see the influence of poe's creepy tales on it, with the MC's disturbing monomania; mirror hell is already basically junji ito, also about monomania (the guy loves mirrors) but full of increasingly bizarre examples of it, kinda like the first chapter of uzumaki, I don't think this is really a high point of the book though; what is a high point is caterpillar, a haunting story that I've seen decribed as "ero-guro", not for the faint of heart but I recommend it to anyone that can stand it >:3 most of the other short stories are pretty interesting mystery tales (as in, about crimes), an unifying theme being "the perfect crime"; it seems rampo was the founder of the japanese mystery genre. the more you know!

the golem is awesome! I think it's at its best during the first half or so when you really can't tell what's going on exactly, afterwards it gets comparatively more straightforward and it loses a bit of the charm I think, still cool though, especially the ending! it's on my list of books to recommend to others :3 made me want to pick up tarot too!

A lonely, quiet person has observations and experiences that are at once both more indistinct and more penetrating than those of one more gregarious; his thoughts are weightier, stranger, and never without a tinge of sadness. (...) Loneliness fosters that which is original, daringly and bewilderingly beautiful, poetic. But loneliness also fosters that which is perverse, incongruous, absurd, forbidden.

This sounds like something I'd be into honestly, I'm a big sucker for Sci-Fi. School made us read Fahrenheit 451, that one is pretty gas I like it a lot, definitely one of my favorites of the ones we were assigned

Speaking of, recently I finished one Klara and the Sun (2021) by Kazuo Ishiguro. Bit of a newer release.

It's a bit less fun than your synopsis of snow crash lol, but it has a very nice take on the "robotic companionship" trope commonly found in other Sci-Fi works, I love that the MC, an "Artificial Friend" is more of a stand-in for what it means to be an aging parent, the Mother is just such a tragic character too

I think it does the whole "MC is a robot" thing a little TOO well honestly, the narration is noticeably dry a lot and you kind of need to think about the context not presented to really get the characterization out of it

i actually got smoked i didnt see this media postulation board and made a lit thread in general board on accident so ill just say what i said in there p much lol

ive been also getting back into reading heavy the past year or so, been reading a lot of contemporary translated fiction and older english classics. currently im reading nausea by jean paul sartre, its good af so far and i think that even tho im not much of a philosophy guy, philosophical novels with some semblance of a "plot" can still be quite accessible regardless of how much u know about the topic (on existentalism ive only rly read camus' the stranger before this) so i would recommend it so far its good af.

favorite authors so far for me are ismail kadare (general of the dead army and broken april are prob my favorite books so far that ive read, albanian bias though lol but i would highly recommend him first and foremost to anyone looking for new books to read), natsume soseki (so far only have read kokoro and kusamakura but picked up a copy of botchan the other day and hoping to read it soon after some stuff im reading currently), kafka, and clarice lispector (looking forward to reading more of her works!) also love queneau and borges but i need to read more of their stuff honestly...

i read convenience store woman a while back and loved it! ive never read anything by rampo tho i might have to tap in sometime. if u havent already read it u should give kokoro a shot, its prob the best japanese book ive read so far and maybe like top 10 books ive read period although id have to give that more thought on a reread one day.
